PARENTING TIPS
Job Description: Long term, challenging work, in chaotic environment. Potential parent will need to demonstrate excellent communications and organisational skills. Must be willing to work long and varied hours - including weekends, nights and 24 hour shifts where required and without notice. Some travel and 'taxiing' will be obligatory. Travel expenses are non refundable. No training given. Must have good sense of humour, there is no pay!
Responsibilities: Candidates will occasionally need to be willing to be hated, at least until someone needs $20 for the movies. Must be willing to bite tongue frequently. Must be able to to from 0 to 100 in a nano second, when screaming is heard from the back yard. Must have eyes in back of head. Must be willing to organise social occasions for a variety of clients of various ages and mental outlooks. Must be willing to be indispensable one minute and embarrassed the next.
Possibility of Promotion: Nil. This is a long-term position, and you must remain there for years, without complaint, financial reward or reimbursement of any kind.
Wages: You pay them! Frequent pay rises will ensue. When you finally die, you give them whatever is left.

- Let go of the idea of having the 'prefect' child.
- Manage your temper.

- Improve your own self esteem and confidence. Remember, you are a role model for your kids. They will copy you!
- Learn how to communicate effectively.
- Where possible, foster a good relationship with your partner.
- Create a balance between family life and career.
- Seek 'win win' situations.
- Negociate.
- Establish healthy boundaries.
- Foster and encourage respect.
- Eliminate family secrets.
- Invite your kids to have input into family decisions and rules.
- Celebrate uniqueness and individuality. Encourage your kids to have a different opinion to yours.
- Place value on these opinions.
- Don't wrap your kids in cotton wool.
- Encourage autonomy.
- Teach your kids that feelings are a choice.
- Give your kids freedom to make choices.
- Love them unconditionally and without expectation.
- Allow your kids to make mistakes and help them to gain the learning and understanding in a non blaming, non judgmental way.
- Show empathy when your kids get 'hard knocks'.
- Don't try to 'fix' everything or rescue your kids. They learn by making mistakes.
- Be open and honest with your children.
- Describe the behaviour.
- Do not name call or lable the child.
- Try to catch your child doing something good.
- Ignore minor offences.
- Don't corner your kids in lies.
- Advise you kids of the logical consequences of their behaviour.
- Be consistent.
- Follow through.
- Be assertive, not aggressive.
